NEVADA CITY, Calif. September 13, 2018 – The Lake Vera Round Mountain Firewise Committee is inviting neighbors to their upcoming meeting on September 19th at 10:00 a.m. in the Gene Albaugh Community Room at the Madelyn Helling Library.

The Lake Vera Round Mountain area became a certified Firewise Community on January 8, 2018 after several years of work by a group of neighbors. The LVRM Firewise Community includes 478 parcels of which 349 are developed with residences and an estimated population of 831 people based on US Census data.

This spring, with the help of an Americorps crew assigned by the Nevada County Fire Safe Council, the group cleared brush on Lake Vera Road between the various youth camps. By removing the flammable vegetation, not only was the fire danger reduced but visibility on the windy stretch of road has greatly improved.

The group wants to hear from residents in the area about their concerns and provide information on the “Firewise Lifestyle,” including free defensible space advisory visits, resources for homeowners to manage their land and planning neighborhood work parties. The group is also in the early planning stages for an evacuation drill in the Spring of 2019.

Neighbors are welcome to sign up for the group’s mailing list to receive Firewise tips and alerts like Red Flag warnings, fires in the area and Firewise events and meetings. The group also encourages everyone to sign up for Nevada County’s Code Red emergency alert system.
