NEVADA CITY, Calif. August 23, 2017 – On Tuesday afternoon, between noon and 4:45 pm, 212 lightning strikes hit the ground on the Tahoe National Forest and were recorded by WFMI BLM Lightning Detection.

The geographic distribution was as follows: 3 for American River Ranger District, 100 for Truckee Ranger District, 77 for Sierraville Ranger District, and 32 for Yuba River Ranger District.

The lightning caused 5 small fires on the Tahoe National Forest, 4 are out.

Smokejumpers are on the Chimney Fire located approximately 3 mi. east of Devils Postpile.

Additional lightning activity is again expected this afternoon.
