NEVADA CITY, Calif. October 22, 2019 – The Nevada County Board of Supervisors recognized the Rotary Clubs of Nevada County for their continuous efforts to eradicate polio worldwide by contributing to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

The Rotary Club of Grass Valley, the Rotary Club of Grass Valley South, the Nevada City Rotary Club, the 49er Rotary Club of Nevada City, the Rotary Club of Penn Valley, the Sunrise Rotary Club of Truckee, and the Truckee Rotary Club are part of 60 clubs throughout Rotary District 5190 with members supporting the international effort of making the world polio free.

The number of polio cases has dropped by 99.9 percent since 1988 and the world stands on the threshold of eradicating the disease. Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. It is crucial to eliminate the disease that is endemic in these three countries and keep other countries polio-free.

Nevada County Public Health Officer Dr. Ken Cutler lauded the efforts of the Rotarians and praised the medical health professionals risking their lives to administer the life-saving vaccine.

The Rotary Clubs of Nevada County have several events scheduled for Thursday, all designed to bring awareness to local residents. No matter if you prefer Pints for Polio, Pizza for Polio, or want to Give Polio the Boot, there’s an event for you.
