Every year, our department, along with neighboring fire departments, responds to smoke checks and campfires in the river canyon. With record low snowpack and rainfall combined with the steep terrain of the river canyon, campfires could turn into a major disaster. Additionally, please avoid illegal parking as it can hinder emergency vehicles and congest evacuation routes. Please, help us keep this area safe. Fire and the river canyon just don’t mix.

A weak weather system moving through the area this morning is bringing light showers to the mountains and far northern Sacramento Valley. A stronger weather system will bring widespread rain and mountain snow to northern California tonight through Sunday. Mountain travel impacts are expected, especially tomorrow. Increased onshore winds are expected with the strongest winds tonight into tomorrow, especially in the mountains. Thunderstorms will be possible Sunday afternoon & evening with no impacts expected to recent burn scars at this time. Some thunderstorms could become strong in the Sacramento Valley with the chance of funnel clouds or weak tornadoes. Rain and snow showers will linger into Monday with dry and warm weather returning Tuesday through next week.

We will also see a slight chance for a few showers and isolated thunderstorms over the Sierra mainly from Highway 50 south. Small hail and brief heavy rain will be possible with any thunderstorms. There is no need to report the plume of smoke south of I-80 between Auburn and Colfax, numerous firefighters are assigned to this prescribed fire.
April 20, 2021 at 9:35 AM Showers and thunderstorms today and tomorrow, pattern change possible this weekend. A weather system will be pushing over the area today and that will bring scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. The best chances will be over the higher elevations but some showers and isolated thunderstorms will be possible in the Valley mainly from Stockton north. The system will push to the south tomorrow but showers and isolated thunderstorms chances will remain in the forecast over the Sierra mainly from I-80 south. Small hail and brief periods of heavy rain will be the main threat with any thunderstorms. Although brief heavy rain is possible, no debris flow impacts are expected to burn scars. This system will also bring locally breezy north winds mainly over the northern Sacramento Valley along with very low humidity tomorrow. Quiet weather is then expected for the rest of the week. We are keeping an eye on the potential for a wetter system Sunday into early next week that could bring widespread rain and snow to the region along with some mountain travel impacts.

Public Health officials requested genetic sequencing of a positive test in February, after a person who already had COVID-19 was re-infected. Results from the State lab came back yesterday.
51,525 doses have been administered to the Nevada County residents as of today. This includes both first and second doses.
