* At 444 PM PDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated thunderstorms with very heavy rain over the area. The rain will cause flooding. Up to one inch of rain has already fallen, and more heavy rain is expected through early evening.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include: Paradise, Oroville, Brush Creek Rs, Palermo, Pulga, Thermalito, Stirling City, Hurleton, Brownsville, areas east of Oroville, Concow, Challenge, Iowa City, Bangor, Forbestown, and Paynes Creek, and possibly areas near Chico.

Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area due to slow moving thunderstorms that will continue into the early evening.

People in or near area lakes, rivers, and streams should remain cautious to the dangers of cold springtime waters. If exposed to cold waters, even experienced swimmers can lose muscle control very quickly, and any fast flowing water will make rescue difficult. Symptoms of hypothermia include: shivering, cold hands and feet, numbness, loss of dexterity, mental sluggishness, and pain from cold. If you witness someone with any of these symptoms, find help immediately.

May 18, 2019 at 10:55 PM An update from Jamie Jones, Executive Director of the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County: We only have a few containers open for drop off at the Fairgrounds tomorrow as well as at the La Barr Meadows location. All other sites are at max capacity and will not be accepting green waste.

The community once again showed up and contributed to the removal and disposal of some astonishing numbers. We were still able to achieve maximum capacity with an additional site and Waste Management replenishing containers all day today. We should be proud of all the hard work and participation the community has shown. Rain or shine, our residents have proven they are committed to achieving fuels reduction projects and defensible space.

P.S. ASPOA is also running their community Green Waste Drop Site this weekend and it is available to Alta Sierra residents.

With an upper low moving in from Nevada this evening, some of the showers and thunderstorms could move down into the Valley, particularly the northern San Joaquin. This system will increase northerly winds over the northern Sacramento Valley with gusts nearing 30-40 mph at times between 11 AM and 9 PM today. Outside of some scattered mountain showers, the weekend should be warm and dry across the region. May 6, 2019 at 8:20 AM CAL FIRE crews will start pile burning today through May 10th near Lake City Road. The project plans to burn 200 acres starting with piles at the Shields Camp and Bear Tree parcels. Smoke will be visible in North San Juan, Camptonville, Lake City and Pike. This is the completion of the Yuba Watershed Institute ‘Inimin Forest grant for hazardous fuels reduction on BLM lands. Last year, brush cutting and forest thinning took place, now it is time to burn the slash piles. There is no need to report the smoke, firefighters will be in attendance until the burn is completed.

The storm is nearly stationary. Dime size hail is possible with this storm. Locations impacted include: Sierra City, Bowman Lake and Bassetts. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

The program was so popular all disposal containers filled at six locations by midday on Saturday. The Nevada County Fairgrounds, Gate 8, is the only location that will be open on Sunday, May 5th.

Plans are in place to scale up capacity at each site for the following weekends in May. This program is largely run by volunteers. May 1, 2019 at 8:37 PM Firefighters made contact with the homeowner on Grizzly Hill. The burn pile is being extinguished now, the homeowner did not have a burn permit (today is the first day of permits required.)
