October 18, 2023 at 12:05 PM Expect smoke and haze from prescribed burns to intensify through late afternoon and evening. This smoke forecast does not include residential burn piles that can emit a lot of smoke in their immediate vicinity if they are too big, contain too many leaves, or are lit too early. Particulate matter contained in woodsmoke sinks as temperatures go down, which is why the smell of smoke often intensifies overnight. Please be considerate of your neighbors when lighting burn piles – follow the rules and recommendations issued by your local air quality district.

This is an experimental smoke forecast model provided by NOAA. It is NOT an official air quality forecast. The official Air Quality forecast for California can be found here: AirNow (fire.airnow.gov)

October 18, 2023 at 9:49 AM Several large prescribed burns are continuing today and in the coming days:

40 acres above Blue Lake (and Lake Spaulding)
70 acres near Yuba Pass north of Hwy 49 in Sierra County
110 acres near Placer Big Trees
176 acres near La Porte
On both the Butterfly Valley and La Porte RX – Grass Flat projects, firefighters will be working on mop-up, holding and patrol.

The determination to pause ignitions for the Butterfly Valley Project was made this morning by fire leadership on the Mount Hough Ranger District following unexpected smoke impacts yesterday when predicted winds did not occur. There is still lingering smoke in Quincy, Meadow Valley, Greenhorn Ranch and other area communities this morning and concerns about the forecast, which resulted in the decision to not continue ignitions today.

October 18, 2023 at 7:29 AM To start your morning, some great photos by reader Dave Hershberger. He says, “We don’t often see bears during daylight hours. And when we do, the sightings are often too short to go get a real camera. But on October 7 everything came together. The bears were here for a good 10 minutes, out in the open. I was able to step out into the breezeway with a real camera and I was far enough away that I could have quickly escaped back into the house if mama decided to charge.” Thanks for sharing these Dave!

October 1, 2023 at 3:28 PM From a caring reader: This cat has been visiting us for the past 2 weeks, more and more frequently. We are in the southern part of Alta Sierra, off of Alexandra Way and George Way. He does not have a collar, seems to be male without any ear clipping. He is very sweet and seems like he is well socialized and potentially missing his family. We thought he might just be on a stroll about the neighborhood from his home, but we have seen him at very late hours in the night and on our cameras very early in the morning. We have given him love, water and a shelter spot, but would love to reunite him with you if he is your kitty, or at least have peace of mind he is just an outdoor neighborhood cat. If not, we can take him to Sammies to get checked for a microchip. Please call or text 916-220-5183 if he’s yours.
