September 27, 2018 (ROCKLIN, CA) Sierra College is supporting the arts by encouraging makers to create and submit fashions made of 80% recycled materials for the Arts Council of Placer County (ACPC) Reinvent the Runway by September 30. Artists are competing for cash prizes up to $500 as well as the opportunity to be displayed at ACPC events.
Applications are due September 30 and can be made through the Placer Arts website (http://www.placerarts.org/fashionshow/). Individuals and teams may enter; students, businesses, organizations and groups of friends are encouraged to demonstrate their creativity by molding recycled materials into fashions that can be modeled. As this a “reinvention” of the runway concept, makers are encouraged to add lights, sound and other technology to the fashion designs.
The public is invited to watch the Reinvent the Runway fashion show on Friday, October 5 at 6:30 PM at Hacker Lab Powered by Sierra College, located at 4415 Granite Dr. #200, Rocklin. Selected recycled fashions will also be on display at the City of Rocklin Mini Maker Faire (https://www.rocklin.ca.us/event/rocklin-mini-maker-faire-0) held at Sierra College, 5100 Sierra College Blvd, Rocklin on Saturday October 6 from 9am to 4 pm; admission and parking are free. The Arts Council of Placer County will incorporate ten fashions, by invitation only, into the pop up gallery at Hacker Lab powered by Sierra College, 4415 Granite Dr. #200, Rocklin through November 30 and as part of the free Placer Artists Studio Tour November 9-11 from 10 am to 5 pm.
Sierra College Makerspaces are building inclusive, collaborative makerspace communities at all three campuses and in partnership with community organizations, explained Carol Pepper-Kittredge, Associate Dean, Workforce Innovation, Sierra College. “The Sierra Makerspaces team is excited to partner with the Arts Council of Placer County to inspire students, faculty, artists and community members to innovate with recycled materials,” said Pepper-Kittredge.
Jim Crosthwaite, Executive Director, ACPC, indicated that the Reinvent the Runway taps into the trend to create art from recycled materials as well as attracts artists and students who see the social benefit of reusing and repurposing materials. “As Makers continue to be widely accepted as producers of art, many types of materials and methods are utilized to create works of art, not the least of which is utilizing recycled materials and helping to educate the public on the importance of looking at these types of materials for a variety of uses,” said Crosthwaite. Reinvent the Runway also brings attention to the Maker movement, explained Crosthwaite. “Our organization participates in the City of Rocklin Mini Maker Faire each year and we chose this as our project for 2018, adding in the off-site element,” said Crosthwaite. “We value the partnership with Sierra Makerspaces in such ventures; together we can educate the public on the contributions of Makers in our communities.”
Sierra College students can join Hacker Lab powered by Sierra College in Rocklin at a discounted student rate. “In makerspaces, students can explore new technology, discover personal interests and experiment with building creations that they dream up,” said Pepper-Kittredge. “The Placer Arts Reinvent the Runway is the perfect vehicle to inspire students and give them a reason to develop new maker skills using sewing machines, electronics, laser cutters and 3D printers to accessorize their fashions. I’m participating too and created a gown made out of an old parachute and thrift store leather jacket to enter.”
