YUBA COUNTY, Calif. May 23, 2018 – The Yuba River Ranger District is conducting an underburn within the Pendola area, along the 47 Road. Yesterday, firefighters successfully burned 65 acres in two units of the planned project. An additional 20 acres are planned for today. Smoke will be visible again at Bullards an in the Marysville Road area.
Good fires prevent bad ones
Underburns such as this one not only reduce the fuel load but also provide valuable training opportunities for firefighters. New members of the Tahoe’s Hotshot crew were able to gain experience, cutting line and monitoring the burn.
These burns are performed under controlled conditions, temperature, smoke dispersion (think air quality) and fuel moisture being some of the factors considered. A little smoke now as compared to weeks of being shrouded in wildfire smoke is a good trade off.
