GRASS VALLEY, Calif. September 20, 2018 – A small fire on Old Tunnel Road behind the Dollar Store was quickly contained by firefighters to a 20 by 50 spot. However, emergency responders discovered a  body in the middle of the fire. The Fire Investigator was dispatched to investigate in conjunction with Grass Valley Police.

Grass Valley Police Lieutenant Joe Matteoni provided the following statement: “At about 6:45pm, an officer on patrol noticed small plume of smoke coming from a wooded area between Sutton Way and Old Tunnel Road. He responded quickly with an extinguisher as GVFD personnel were dispatched. The fire was contained to a space about 20 yards x 50 yards. While the fire was being extinguished, the remains of an unknown male were discovered.

At this time the investigation is in its infancy. The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released when possible. The roadways are open but please take caution as many emergency vehicles are still on site.”

The fire was contained at 7:20 p.m. and investigators and fire personnel remain on scene at this time.
