North San Juan, CA – The next national Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Take Back Day is scheduled for April 27, 2024, which serves as an opportunity for community members to safely turn in unneeded medication for safe disposal.

Take Back Day April 24, 2024

Locally, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) is offering three Take Back Day locations on April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.:

  • North San Juan Fire Protection District Station 1: 10057 Reservoir Street, North San Juan, CA 95960
  • Penn Valley Shopping Center: 17420 Penn Valley Drive, Penn Valley, CA 95946
  • Sheriff’s Office Substation: 11010 Combie Road, Auburn, CA 95602 (Bear River Library next to the old Holiday Market)

“Expired or unused prescription medications pose a public safety risk,” said NCSO Lt. Jason Perry. “Participating in Take Back Day helps ensure unused prescription medications don’t end up in the wrong hands or in the hands of children. We encourage community members to check their cabinets for expired medications and to stop by one of our stations on April 27 to ensure the medication is properly disposed.”

The following items will be accepted by NCSO on April 27 at the three Take Back Day locations: prescriptions, including controlled substances; over-the-counter medication; electronic vaping devices and cartridges (excluding devices with lithium-ion batteries); and veterinary medications.

The following will not be accepted: sharps; medical waste; aerosols or hydrogen peroxide; cannabis; illegal drugs; and drugs from DEA registrants.

For those unable to participate in Take Back Day on April 27, select businesses offer year-round safe disposal. A list is available at https://www.nevadacountyca.gov/683/Prescription-Drug-Take-Back.
