Nevada City, Calif. April 30, 2024 — The City of Nevada City is taking proactive steps to enhance wildfire safety for its residents and community. Beginning May 1st the Office of Emergency Services (OES) will begin defensible space inspections of all parcels within City limits.

Defensible space zones

Education plays a crucial role in wildfire preparedness. The city is dedicated to raising awareness about the risks of wildfires and empowering residents to take necessary precautions to protect their properties. A new defensible space inspection software called Fire Aside will be utilized to provide customized reports for each parcel. In each report, recipients will be given a clear list of tasks and priorities to ensure their property is adequately protected and a healthy defensible space is created. Fire Aside will aid the City in ensuring properties are in compliance with the defensible space ordinance that is aligned with CAL FIRE and Nevada County standards. Nevada City is pleased to connect neighbors within the County with proper resources. Attached is a checklist that highlights priorities residents can take to prepare for inspections.

In addition, the City of Nevada City is offering resources and incentives to promote wildfire preparedness. Residents will be receiving the “Ready, Set, Go” handbook from Nevada County Office of Emergency Services, which provides valuable information on defensible space standards, home hardening, and emergency preparedness tools. The city is also offering reimbursements of up to $100 for home hardening projects that seal door sweeps, fill voids, and replaces screening with 1/8th – 1/16th inch fire resistant alternatives.

For more information on wildfire preparedness and the ordinance residents can visit the official Nevada City website and access the “Wildfire Preparedness” section at https://www.nevadacity.gov/wildfire-preparedness. A map will be provided at the above website that shows when and where staff strives to be within the month of May.
