August 9, 2016 at 11:49 PM Helicopters with Forward Looking Infrared Radar (FLIR) still in the canyon, looking for the shooter.

August 9, 2016 at 10:51 PM Per NCSO Sgt. Bob Jakobs: The victim of the shooting incident outside the town of Washington has been successfully extricated by helicopter and is being transported to Sutter Roseville Hospital for further treatment. Tactical teams from both Nevada and Placer County are currently conducting a search of the area for the shooter.

August 9, 2016 at 10:21 PM CHP helicopter H20 has lifted with the patient and is en route to the LZ at Whitecloud.

August 9, 2016 at 10:11 PM Washoe medical helicopter is en route to the landing zone with an ETA of 35 minutes.

August 9, 2016 at 9:59 PM Patient and other SAR members have been extricated. CAL FIRE is now in special staffing, all personnel currently on duty will remain on duty until further notice.

August 9, 2016 at 9:27 PM Per medics on scanner, the patient is awake and alert. Extrication of the three SAR volunteers was successful. The patient is now being transported to the landing zone where an air ambulance is on standby.

August 9, 2016 at 9:26 PM Cal OES Law Enforcement is supporting Nevada County Sheriff on incident w/Region IV mutual aid law enforcement assets.

August 9, 2016 at 8:52 PM  Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal provided the following update:

At approximately 6:30 pm, three SAR volunteers were in the Yuba canyon, approximately 3.5 miles downstream from the Town of Washington looking for a missing hiker. They heard 2, possibly 3 gunshots.

One SAR volunteer was shot in the hip and is incapacitated but stable. Both the patient and the two other SAR volunteers sheltered in place.

NCSO is assisted by CHP and Placer County major incident team. Helicopters from CHP, Placer, Butte and Sacramento counties are assisting. At this time, law enforcement is moving a team to get the patient and the two other SAR members out of the canyon and into medical treatment.

The patient’s wound is described as serious but not life-threatening.

August 9, 2016 at 8:35 PM – Medics, fire fighters and rescue personnel are staging both at Relief Hill and in the North San Juan area.

August 9, 2016 at 8:25 PM – At this time, river access points are being controlled by law enforcement. Helicopters and Air Attack planes are still in the air, but cutoff time will come soon. The search for the shooter is ongoing. You are advised to avoid the river canyon at this time.

August 9, 2016 at 8:03 PM – Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal stated a member of a SAR team was shot in the Yuba river canyon, between Edwards Crossing and the Town of Washington.At this time, numerous agencies are assisting Nevada County Sheriff’s Office in the search for the shooter. The incident occurred in a very remote part of the canyon. Helicopters are assisting the ongoing search.

Search&Rescue had set up a command post (ICP) on Relief Hill in Washington to look for a 75-year old mising hiker. A secondary ICP has been set up at Malakoff Diggins, outside of North San Juan.

  1. Blessings to the wounded and family. It’s a sad state of affairs when Good Samaritans are at this kind of risk when helping others. Blessings and safety to those still looking for what I hope is someone who was unintentionally shooting unsafely and not actually trying to kill or maim another human. God’s Speed

  2. The river squatters as a group will know very well who this is. If they don’t fess up pronto, lots of details, clear them ALL out. If indeed there is a grow, then this dude got used to scaring people away with his gun. He may not have even known he was shooting at a SAR member, He probably thought he had pot rustlers. Deep in the canyon one does not get the best light, so it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out where this is.
