GRASS VALLEY, Calif. April 23, 2024 – A beautiful and unique photography exhibit, “The Color of Movement”  will open on May 2, 2024 at the Edward Jones gallery in Grass Valley.  This exhibit does not include traditional photography with sharply focused subjects.  Instead photographers used a technique called Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) as they shot their photos. The resulting images are a stunning mix of colors, shapes and motion – evoking a variety of moods and energy.  The opening reception will be on May 2 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm.

Among the nine photographers: Dee Anne Dinelli, Anita DuPratt, Monica Hughes, Donna Levreault, Mike Oitzman, Charlotte Peterson, Tom Quinn and Ann Westling, some expressed why they like ICM and how it is different.

  • “This technique can create especially beautiful colors and landscapes,” said Monica Hughes, coordinator of the exhibit.
  • “It often eliminates detail in favor of lines, shapes and color as well as motion,” added Janice Rosner.

With Intentional Camera Movement, the camera is literally moved as the shot is being taken.  Some move the camera vertically, some horizontally, some in circles, and others with a zoom lens.

  • “My images were taken with roughly one second exposures with vertical movement of the camera.  I find it provides a different perspective on nature – creating a somewhat dream-like effect,” said Tom Quinn.

All the photographers expressed delight in using this technique.

  • “Until I learned how to use ICM, I always focused on ‘real photography’.  But ICM has opened up an entirely new genre and experience for me,” stated Mike Oitzman.
  • “I feel much less constrained when using ICM with a resulting playfulness and whimsy in many of my images,” said Charlotte Peterson.
  • “Having spent so many years perfecting the art of not moving when taking a photo, I was amazed by what emerged when I moved with the camera’s shutter:  a door opened to a different form of creativity,” said Anita DuPratt.

Although there will be photos of Scotts Flat Lake, Brunswick Basin, downtown Grass Valley and the Cascade Canal, they boast a distinctly different look and may not be recognizable.

  • “The resulting images seem energized and unexpected, as if you have opened your eyes for the first time,” explained Donna Levreault.
  • Dee Anne Dinelli concluded, “Sometimes, really good things happen when you experiment and don’t know exactly what you are doing.”
