The Nevada County Resource Conservation District (NCRCD) is committed to supporting landowners and managers in enhancing their land through sustainable practices. Whether you’re a homeowner with a small parcel or a larger landholder, NCRCD provides valuable resources to help you improve the health and productivity of your land. By offering a variety of seminars, workshops, and classes, NCRCD equips landowners with the knowledge and tools necessary to implement effective conservation methods that promote water efficiency, native planting, and proper resource management.

One of the primary goals of the NCRCD is to help landowners integrate conservation planning into their land management practices. For this reason, we offer a range of educational opportunities that focus on good land stewardship. Whether you’re looking to learn more about water management, enhance wildlife habitat, or improve soil health, NCRCDโ€™s seminars and workshops provide expert guidance on sustainable practices for both rural and urban landscapes.

A Focus on Prescribed Fire and Wildlife Habitat Restoration

One of the NCRCDโ€™s most active initiatives is its Prescribed Fire Program, which aims to provide landowners with the knowledge and tools needed to safely implement fire as a management tool. This year, thanks to funding from the California Wildlife Conservation Board and the Point Blue Conservation Science- Roots Grant, NCRCD was able to host a community workshop that highlighted an important aspect of land stewardship: wildlife habitat restoration.

The Point Blue Conservation Science initiative is working to restore wildlife habitats across California, with a particular focus on enhancing habitats for pollinators, monarch butterflies, and other vital species. By focusing on working landsโ€”such as rural farms, vineyards, ranches, and forestsโ€”this project seeks to improve land management and foster sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and the community.

In December 2024, NCRCD partnered with Live Wire Products in Penn Valley to host a hands-on workshop at the Barhydt Ranch in Nevada County. The workshop, which was offered free of charge to community members, focused on installing portable polywire electric fencing as part of a broader discussion on the benefits of prescribed grazing, animal exclusion, and fencing options for landowners. Attendees learned about various types of fencing, how to set up a demonstration paddock, and the importance of using temporary fencing to enhance land and livestock management.

Looking Ahead: More Workshops and Opportunities

The NCRCD is excited to continue its work with the Point Blue Conservation Science- Roots Grant and offer additional workshops in the coming year. These workshops are part of a broader effort to encourage sustainable land management practices across Nevada County. Upcoming sessions will focus on key topics such as:

  • Hedgerow Planting: Learn about the benefits of hedgerows for biodiversity, erosion control, and soil health.
  • Irrigation Techniques: Explore water-efficient methods for irrigating landscapes, crops, and pastures.
  • Pond Maintenance: Gain insights into the best practices for maintaining healthy ponds and water features on your property.

The NCRCD is committed to fostering collaboration and learning within the community, and we are actively seeking feedback from local landowners to help shape future workshops. Your input is invaluable in ensuring that the programs we offer meet the needs and interests of our diverse community.
