Aging Well - 2025

Recent developments in federal grants have led to uncertainty in certain funding streams that nonprofits like GCSS rely on. This situation places greater emphasis on community-driven support. The upcoming Aging Well fundraiser is particularly important because it provides much-needed revenue for programs that ensure local seniors receive nourishment, warmth, and social engagement. According to the organization, the Meals on Wheels program alone delivers tens of thousands of meals each year, serving as a lifeline for older adults in Nevada County who might otherwise go without adequate nutrition or social contact.

The February 2nd Aging Well event will offer an afternoon of indulgent tastings from an impressive list of ten local vendors, featuring local wine, chocolate, and cheese producers. Guests can mingle with artisans who are passionate about their craft and discover unique flavor pairings. In addition, GCSS have arranged both a silent auction and a raffle where attendees can bid on or win a variety of local goods, unique art, and professional services. Everything from handmade crafts to gourmet gift baskets will be available, making the day as exciting as it is delicious.

GCSS Executive Director, Leslie Lovejoy notes that the last Aging Well event was a major success, adding that the support of local residents is more crucial than ever. The staff and volunteers have demonstrated incredible dedication during the pandemic and building of the now Sierra Gold Senior Center; ensuring that the Meals on Wheels program consistently delivers nutritious meals in its dedicated kitchen, while also providing the space for enriching and educational activities for our community. The Firewood Program has likewise been vital, helping seniors stay warm throughout the colder months, even after having to move lots last year. Despite GCSS’s resilience, the organization points out that sustainability is ultimately linked to the generosity of donors, especially in the face of uncertain federal funding.

Attendees at Aging Well can expect wine and chocolate pairings from a range of local artisans. Vendors include Grant Marie Winery, Dave the Wine Merchant, Wise Willa Winery, Alta Sierra Wine Shop, Stellar Ridge Vineyard, Cork 49, Lucchesi, Nevada City Winery, Coco’s Candy & Creamery, and Nevada City Chocolate

Shoppe. Each vendor is eager to showcase its specialty, and the lively local atmosphere promises conversation, live music, and a spirit of community.

Tickets for the event are on sale now, priced at $35 online through Friday at 4pm, and then $40 at the door, restricted to adults aged 21 and over. Supporters who cannot attend can still make a difference by making a direct donation to GCSS, volunteering for one of its programs, or spreading the word about the fundraiser. In light of a potential freeze in federal funding, GCSS is counting on the public to step up as they have in the past, ensuring that older adults in Nevada County continue to receive essential resources. The organization warmly invites everyone to an extraordinary afternoon of wine, chocolate, and cheese tasting, where all proceeds will help safeguard vital programs that might otherwise be jeopardized by uncertain government support. Organizers extend their heartfelt gratitude to the community for any assistance they can offer.
