NEVADA CITY, Calif. — The Nevada County Library is excited to present a free screening of the critically acclaimed science fiction film Annihilation on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at the historic Nevada Theatre. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the film beginning promptly at 7 p.m. This special event is part of the Nevada County Reads 2025 celebration.

The 2025 Nevada County Reads book selection is Annihilation, the award-winning novel by Jeff VanderMeer. Community members are encouraged to read the book and participate in a series of discussions and events inspired by its thought-provoking themes.

About Annihilation

Based on the award-winning novel by Jeff VanderMeer, Annihilation follows a team of scientists as they journey into a mysterious, otherworldly phenomenon known as Area X—an uncharted and dangerous zone where nature has begun to mutate in unpredictable ways. Starring Academy Award winner Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac, the film was directed by acclaimed filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Ex Machina).

According to RogerEbert.com, Annihilation is “one of the best in this recent wave of sci-fi films.” The movie is rated R for violence and is recommended for audiences ages 17 and older.

Join the Nevada County Reads Community Conversation

This film screening is just one of many events celebrating Annihilation as part of Nevada County Reads 2025. Throughout the next two months, the Nevada County Library will host book club discussions, author events, and interactive programs exploring the novel’s themes of discovery, transformation, and the mysteries of the unknown.

The event series will culminate in a highly anticipated author talk with Jeff VanderMeer on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the Nevada County Sierra College Campus.
