Grass Valley, California, September 5, 2025 – Music in the Mountains invites children, families, and music lovers of all ages to experience the magic of live orchestral music in The Conductor’s Spellbook, an interactive concert at the Center for the Arts on Thursday, September 18 at 9:00 AM.
This 50-minute performance tells the story of young Tony Stradivarius, who discovers a mysterious book of spells during a class field trip to the symphony. With each turn of the page, Tony learns to control the orchestra in surprising and delightful ways—bringing music, imagination, and laughter to life on stage.
Perfect for elementary school audiences and families alike, The Conductor’s Spellbook introduces children to the instruments of the orchestra, the role of the conductor, and the joy of symphonic music in an engaging, interactive format.
Adding to the magic, the performance will be narrated by longtime Music in the Mountains audience favorite Omari Tau. Tau is an accomplished baritone, educator, and composer whose career spans opera, musical theater, jazz, and pop. He has toured internationally with Disney’s The Lion King, directed productions for Sacramento State University, and directed Houston Grand Opera’s Education and Outreach program “Opera To Go!,” which prepared young professionals and college-level artists for the stage. Known for his warmth and charisma, Tau has captivated audiences across California and is a true highlight of every Music in the Mountains season.

Ryan Murray, artistic director for Music in the Mountains, sees this show as a perfect way to introduce kids to classical music. “It is a really fun show where the students interact with the orchestra and the narrator and learn all about the instruments of the orchestra and what a conductor does,” said Murray. “With Omari Tau as our narrator and the full orchestra on stage, young audiences will leave inspired and excited about the power of music.”
Tickets are just $10 and seating is limited to 300 seats. Adults will be seated in the tiered seating area.
