WASHINGTON, D.C. — We aren’t surprised, but we are disappointed. Moments ago, Congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump chose to shut down the government and greenlight mass federal layoffs rather than work across the aisle to lower health care costs.

In response, Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, released the following statement:

“The Trump administration and Congressional Republicans actively decided to shut down the government rather than work with Democratic leaders to ensure people have affordable health care. The consequences will be devastating. Congressional Republicans have consistently used their majority in both chambers of Congress to attack our nation’s health care infrastructure, including passing a law that would ‘defund’ Planned Parenthood and force health centers to shut down. It’s no surprise then that they have no interest in helping the millions of people who are on the brink of facing skyrocketing health care costs because of the majority’s reckless inaction and manufactured crisis.

“That’s why it’s so important that Congressional Democrats continue to fight to keep the government open and to address the health care crisis, including by extending critical Affordable Care Act tax credits. In the face of repeated attacks on our rights and health care, we appreciate the hard work of those fighting to make life better and healthier for all of us. Planned Parenthood Action Fund will continue fighting back so that all people can control their own bodies, lives, and futures.”
