Do the Time Warp Again: Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Nevada Theatre

This October, audiences are invited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show with a live shadow-cast performance at the historic Nevada Theatre. Presented by Paul Emery, Untamed Productions, and the Onyx Theatre, this immersive event runs October 17–19 and promises an unforgettable blend of film, live performance, and audience participation.

Since its release in 1975, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has grown from a small independent film into one of the most enduring cultural phenomena in cinema history. Directed by Jim Sharman and based on Richard O’Brien’s stage musical The Rocky Horror Show, the film introduced audiences to Tim Curry’s groundbreaking role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, alongside Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, and O’Brien himself as Riff Raff. Initially dismissed by critics, Rocky Horror gained new life when midnight audiences began shouting back at the screen, dressing as characters, and creating “shadow casts” that mirrored the movie live on stage. Fifty years later, it remains the longest-running theatrical release in film history and was recognized in 2005 by the Library of Congress as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Nevada City holds a unique place in that history. The Nevada Theatre Film Series, launched in 1979, opened with a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, beginning a local tradition that continues today. For this anniversary celebration, director Cosmo Merryweather leads an all-star shadow cast, including Nick Katzman as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Robert Rushing as Rocky, and Marni Marshall as Janet, alongside a vibrant ensemble bringing to life Brad, Riff Raff, Magenta, Columbia, and the rest of the film’s unforgettable characters.

“This production captures the essence of Rocky Horror,” says Merryweather. “It’s not just about watching a film—it’s about being part of an experience that has brought people together for half a century. The energy of the audience, the interaction with the performers, and the iconic traditions make every show unique.”

Audiences are encouraged to participate in the time-honored traditions of Rocky Horror—from shout-outs to dancing the Time Warp—while enjoying the spectacle of live performance. To ensure everyone’s safety, rice, glitter, confetti, and poppers are not permitted. Costumes and enthusiasm, however, are highly encouraged.
