At 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, Peace Lutheran Church will host the Benefit Concert for Sierra Services for the Blind with performances by a variety of entertaining musicians.
One of the many great things about Nevada County are all the amazing, talented musicians who call it home. Once again Walt Strony, Peace Organist and Artistic Director for Arts@Peace, has gathered some of the areaโs best professional musicians to offer an exceptional concert to benefit the Sierra Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
โWe like to include lots of variety in our concerts, and this event will be no exception,โ said Strony. โSeveral of the performers will be playing music written by blind composers/musicians, of which there are many! Both Bach and Handel had declining eyesight and were composing while blind prior to their deaths. Both had unsuccessful eye surgery in the 1750s by the same questionable traveling โoculist.โ Famous blind contemporary artists include Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder.โ

Performances will include those by the Grass Valley Male Voice Choir, George Husaruk director; Heather MacAdam, vocalist/guitarist; Thom Greathouse, music director for Emmanuel Episcopal and vocalist/pianist with a cabaret style; Toby Thomas-Rose, pianist and music director for local performances and of course, the world-renowned Walt Strony, on organ.
Admission will be by donation – no gift is too small – to the Sierra Services for the Blind located at 546 Searls Avenue in Nevada City. Checks may be made out to Peace Lutheran Church – Memo: SSFTB.ย
Sierra Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired is a nonprofit organization offering many services to their clients. These include transportation to and from medical appointments as far as Sacramento, as well as to SSFTB groups, meetings and events. They offer counseling to those adjusting to loss of sight and their families. SSFTB helps their clients obtain any needed resources, equipment and low-vision assistance including advocacy with blindness-related legal or bureaucratic issues with Social Security, Medicare or insurance companies. All services are free to anyone needing them. SSFTB also works to provide a sense of community and belonging by hosting peer groups and social events.

A wine-and-cheese reception will follow the concert, when the audience can meet the musicians and find information on Sierra Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
Peace Lutheran Church is located at 828 W. Main St., near downtown Grass Valley.
