From flute soloist to orchestral leader, the Grass Valley Symphony Orchestra (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) welcomes George Husaruk as its 2025-26 conductor.

George Husaruk

Mr. Husaruk is a lifelong musician. Born into a musical Ukrainian family who moved to Montreal, Canada, George began studying the violin, and later the recorder and flute as a child at the Royal Conservatory of Music, McGill University. He continued his classical flute studies in Los Angeles and built a musical career performing in rock and roll, jazz, and classical groups.  Over twenty-five years, he taught and conducted middle and high school bands, led various adult choirs, conducted an orchestra in Mendocino, and founded a jazz trio. George joined the Grass Valley Symphony Orchestra as principal flutist in 2019. In addition to conducting the Grass Valley Symphony Orchestra (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute), Mr. Husaruk also leads the Grass Valley Male Voice Choir and the Lake Wildwood Women’s Chorus.

The Grass Valley Symphony Orchestra will hold its fall concert on Wednesday, December 3rd, at 7:00 PM at the Sierra College, Grass Valley campus. Admission and parking are free.

The concert, entitled the Grand Arc of Orchestral Tradition, will transport us on a musical journey through time and tradition, from the countryside to the classical courts and contemporary cinema, featuring works by Gustav Holst, Henry Purcell, film composer John Barry, J.S. Bach, and Haydn.

OLLI Grass Valley Orchestra

Nevada County’s community orchestra was initially formed in 1978. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and Sierra Community College granted funds to the orchestra in 2005, which helped provide rehearsal and performance spaces, and a modest grant for a conductor. Musicians volunteer their time to rehearse and perform for the community.

The Grass Valley Symphony Orchestra concert takes place at 7:00 PM, Wednesday, December 3, 2025, in the Multipurpose Center N12 at Sierra College, 250 Sierra College Drive, Grass Valley.
