The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Nevada County Branch, in partnership with the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools (NCSOS), is proud to announce the eight local middle school students selected as this year’s AAUW Tech Trekkers.
Through hands-on problem-solving and encounters with women role models in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), AAUW Tech Trek helps girls see their futures while having nonstop fun. This one-week summer camp is backed by AAUW’s research and designed to make STEM fields exciting and accessible to girls in middle school—the age when girls’ participation in these fields statistically drops.
Introducing the 2026 Nevada County Tech Trekkers selected for their curiosity, academic drive, and passion for discovery, we are thrilled to congratulate:
- Alleina Alonso – Magnolia
- Hadley Honeycutt – Clear Creek
- Juliette King – Arete Charter
- Tiffany Le – Lyman Gilmore
- Camila Leiva – Seven Hills
- Melody Lime – Union Hill
- Wren Lingo – Yuba River Charter
- Fiona Moon – Grass Valley Charter
These eight students were recognized at a special celebration on May 4th at the NCSOS office.
The event brought together the new cohort with 2025 alumni, nominating teachers, and donors. Superintendent Scott W. Lay and Associate Superintendent of Educational Services, Christine McCormick were in attendance to honor the girls’ achievements.
For many participants, this week-long immersion sparks a lifelong curiosity and places them on a path toward success.
“Tech Trek isn’t just a camp; it’s a turning point,” says the AAUW Tech Trek Committee. “By placing these girls in a university environment with mentors who look like them, we are showing them that a career in STEM isn’t just a possibility—it’s their future.”
Founded in 1998 by AAUW California member Marie Wolbach, Tech Trek has grown from a single site to 22 locations nationwide. A longitudinal study of alumnae demonstrates the program’s
lasting impact, citing significant increases in confidence and the likelihood of pursuing STEM degrees in college.
This July, the Trekkers will head to the UC Davis campus for Camp Jemison. They will live in dorms, eat in the dining commons, and engage in high-level STEM labs.
The selection process is rigorous: each girl was nominated by a 7th-grade math or science teacher, completed a formal application, wrote an essay, and underwent an interview with AAUW members. This year, 26 exceptional candidates applied, making the final selection incredibly difficult for the committee.
This opportunity is provided at no cost to the families. All sponsorships are fully funded by the AAUW Nevada County Branch, made possible by the unwavering generosity of local donors and the vital support of western Nevada County principals and teachers.
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) advances gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. The Nevada County Branch is dedicated to supporting local students and fostering a community where women can thrive in all professional fields.
