For nearly a decade, the Working Lands documentary series has been capturing the stories, struggles, and triumphs of the people who shape Nevada County’s landscapes. What began as a celebration of agricultural heritage has evolved into a broader exploration of how humans and natural systems coexist—and what it will take to steward these lands into the future. With two acclaimed films already part of the series, the long‑awaited third installment is now on the horizon.

Volume I – A History of Agriculture in Nevada County

The series began in 2016 with Working Lands Volume I – A History of Agriculture in Nevada County, a documentary that aired on PBS and quickly became a local favorite. This first film introduces viewers to twelve multigenerational families who continue to ranch and farm on the same land tended by their parents, grandparents, and ancestors before them.

Their stories reveal the deep roots of agriculture in the region—roots nourished by perseverance, tradition, and a profound respect for the land. Through their voices, the film highlights both the challenges of modern farming and the enduring rewards of caring for landscapes that sustain entire communities.

The documentary still airs on PBS KVIE Channel 6 and is available to watch anytime on YouTube Nevada County Resource Conservation District – YouTube.

Volume II – Farming and Ranching in Nevada County

Two years later, Working Lands Volume II – Farming and Ranching in Nevada County expanded the lens, following ten agriculturists whose work blends heritage with innovation. This second film explores the economic realities of small‑scale agriculture, the generational legacies that shape local identity, and the shared dedication that keeps Nevada County’s working lands vibrant.

Viewers are invited into barns, pastures, and family kitchens to witness the intimate connection between people and place. It’s a portrait of resilience—of individuals who not only cultivate food but also restore and manage the natural resources around them.

Volume II also aired on PBS KVIE Channel 6 in 2018 and is available now on YouTube Nevada County Resource Conservation District – YouTube.

Announcing Volume III – The History of Forestry and Fire in Nevada County

Now, the story continues. Working Lands Volume III – The History of Forestry and Fire in Nevada County is nearly here, and it promises to be the most urgent and illuminating chapter yet.

This new film takes viewers deep into the history of Nevada County’s forests and the broader ecological story of California. It examines how past land‑use decisions, fire suppression policies, and changing climate conditions have shaped the forests we see today. More importantly, it explores what it will take to restore these landscapes to a healthy, resilient state.

From forest thinning to modern stewardship practices to the reintroduction of prescribed fire, Volume III offers a clear-eyed look at the tools and knowledge needed to protect both ecosystems and communities. It’s a timely and essential exploration of how we can live with fire—not in fear of it, but in partnership with the natural processes that have shaped these lands for millennia.
