Nevada County Treasurer-Tax Collector Michelle Bodley and Assessor Rolf Kleinhans remind local business owners that annual Unsecured Business Property Tax bills will be mailed in July, with payments due by August 31. Businesses are encouraged to review their bills promptly and pay by the due date to avoid penalties.

Unsecured Business Property Tax is based on the assessed value of business personal property that is not secured by real estate. Common examples include computers and office equipment, machinery and tools, furniture and fixtures, trade equipment, and certain leased equipment used in business operations.

Each year, businesses report these assets to the Assessorโ€™s Office by filing a Business Property Statement (Form 571-L). Using the information provided, along with the requirements of Article XIII of the California Constitution, the Assessorโ€™s Office determines the taxable value of the business property. The Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office then prepares and collects the tax bills.

Unlike property taxes secured by real estate, unsecured property taxes are not backed by land or buildings. As a result, any payment received or postmarked after August 31 is subject to penalties, as there is no grace period.

Businesses may pay their unsecured property tax bill online, by mail using the enclosed payment stub, or in person at the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office, located at 950 Maidu Avenue, Suite 290, Nevada City.

Businesses that have moved, changed mailing addresses, or closed should notify the Assessor’s Office as soon as possible to help ensure tax bills are delivered correctly.
