BIG SUR, Calif. August 29, 2016 – The California Department of Parks and Recreation is lifting the closure of some of its Big Sur region state parks as firefighters begin to gain control of the Soberanes Fire. The fire, which started July 22 in Garrapata State Park due to an illegal campfire, forced the closure of six parks in the region.

Below you will find information the state parks that have reopened and those that continue to be closed to the public:

Andrew Molera State Park

All park lands closed to public entry.

Garrapata State Park

All park lands east of Highway 1 closed to public entry.

Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park

– Open: The western portion of the park, including the McWay Falls Trail, has reopened.
– Closed: All areas east of the parking lot as well as the two environmental campsites west of Highway 1 will remain closed for now.

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Parks

– Open: Big Sur Lodge opened today, August 26. More information: www.bigsurlodge.com.
– Closed: With the exception of the lodge, the park remains closed until further notice.

Point Sur Light Station Historic State Park

Guided tours will resume tomorrow, August 27. More Information: www.pointsur.org.

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

Remains open.
