The Santa Ana wind pattern will gradually break down over the next 24 hours. Gentle offshore flow will continue to weaken tonight with high elevation gusts up to 20 mph. Calm conditions are expected across all elevations by Thursday afternoon. Humidity, however, will remain very dry through Thursday night. Moist conditions will build this weekend with overnight RH recovery up to 80 percent and continued calm to gentle terrain winds. There is high confidence that a dry pattern with potential Santa Ana winds will return as early as Monday, but the strength of the pattern is currently uncertain.

January 15, 2025 at 7:09 AM

Eaton Fire briefing map Jan. 15, 2025

Generally moderate to weak Santa Ana winds will continue early Wednesday with gusts up to 50 mph on high ridges. Low elevations have mostly stayed sheltered from the wind, but there remains a slight risk of wind mixing down to lower elevations this morning. The greatest risk is focused before 10 AM with any peak gusts most likely below 20 mph. Any winds that surface at low elevations will have very inconsistent speed and direction. Winds will gradually calm through the evening with gentle wind by Thursday. Despite calmer winds, conditions will remain very dry with RH consistently below 20 percent. Wednesday will also likely be the warmest day for the next week with highs near 70.

January 14, 2025 at 7:57 PM

Minimal fire behavior with backing, creeping and smoldering. Containment efforts are steadily progressing along the eastern edge of the fire near Santa Ana Canyon. The mobile retardant base at Mount Wilson remains active providing fire retardant for helicopters to drop in inaccessible terrain, where ground crews cannot construct containment line. Infrared flights have identified isolated heat pockets within the interior of the fire area, where fuels continue to burn out. Tactical patrols and mop-up operations continue along the northern perimeter of the fire. Hand crews are actively clearing brush and constructing contingency lines in critical areas of La Caรฑada. Contingency resources are strategically prepositioned throughout communities along the fireโ€™s western edge to due to the Santa Ana wind conditions.

January 14, 2025 at 7:00 AM

Crews will continue reinforcing and maintaining containment lines today to ensure perimeter control. A Mobile Retardant Base has been established at Mt. Wilson to support air operations. High winds are expected to persist through early Wednesday morning, increasing the risk of spot fires, downed trees, and power lines, as well as intensifying fire activity in areas with unburned fuels. Firefighters will conduct tactical patrols and mop-up operations, addressing smoke and heat sources to minimize the chance of fire escaping the perimeter. Structure defense in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) along the southern edge of the fire will remain a top priority.

January 13, 2025 at 7:10 AM

A moderate to strong Santa Ana wind pattern will continue to build in today. Winds will be enhanced throughout the day with terrain influenced winds gusting up to 20 mph in the afternoon even at low elevations. Winds will sharply increase late tonight into early Tuesday, mostly between 10 PM and 6 AM . Wind gusts could reach over 60 mph on the highest peaks with gusts up to 30 mph at low elevations. Waves moving over the mountains will make wind speeds very inconsistent and erratic especially at low elevations. Winds will slightly weaken but remain enhanced through the day Tuesday. RH will remain critically dry during the day and night mostly between 10 and 20 percent.

Ops map for the Eaton Fire on January 13, 2025

Fire Behavior:

Branch V: Steep topography with grass and shrub fuels will allow for rapid fire growth and spotting. Winds will be channeled by topography and be erratic due to the complex terrain of Arroyo Seco Creek. The Station Fire scar is 15 years old and will allow for fire spread in the brush and shrub regrowth.

Branch X: The Bobcat Fire scar is 4 years old and is primarily grass, supporting fire growth but less resistive to control. Winds will primarily be favorable in this Branch, but rollout can cause fire spread, especially in the Winter Creek drainage.

Branch XX & XXX & XL: Fuels are mixed natural and landscape vegetation. Ember cast from the holdover heat in these fuels along with burning structures near control lines can create new spot fires.

Night: Poor humidity recovery and increasing winds will continue the possibility of spotting and additional fire spread.

Contingency/IA: Any new ignitions that are in alignment with wind or slope will be resistant to control. With the dry conditions heavy equipment is a potential ignition source.

January 12, 2025 at 7:15 PM

Today, firefighters continued tactical patrols and responded to public calls for service. Minimal fire growth was observed, and resources continued to construct and improve fire line. Strong early morning winds contributed to flare ups in pockets of fuel and interior islands. Tonight, in addition to perimeter control, crews will work to mitigate hazard trees along roadways to provide safety for firefighters and the public.

The Santa Ana wind pattern will further intensify through the day on Monday, most likely peaking early Tuesday morning. Winds will initially be terrain driven and upslope on Monday. Enhanced gusts at low elevations could reach 20 mph, with up to 50 mph from the northeast at high elevations. Northeast winds will then peak at high elevations overnight on Monday, with gusts up to 60 mph and downslope winds at low elevations up to 30 mph. Relative humidity will remain very dry during this period, between 10 and 15 percent. The general Santa Ana pattern will persist through Wednesday before decreasing late in the week.

Eaton Fire briefing map for January 12, 2025

January 11, 2025 at 6:48 PM

Minimal fire behavior with backing, creeping and smoldering. A Red Flag Warning is in effect for the upper elevations of the fire area through Wednesday. Gusty and dry northeast Santa Ana winds will persist early this week. The strongest winds will be restricted to high elevations, with the greatest chance of winds mixing down to lower elevation early Tuesday.

Observed: As of 1300, drying conditions, with minimum relative humidity on track to be near 15 percent. At high elevations, northeast winds have gradually increased through the day with gusts up to 45 mph along ridges and peaks just north of the fire. Lower elevations have remained more sheltered with gusts below 15 mph.

Planned actions: Provide structure defense on the south side of the fire.

Continue tactical patrol, mop up and mitigate all smoke and heat sources to the depth necessary to produce a low probability of escape along the perimeter and within the wildland urban interface areas affected by the fire.

Conduct direct and indirect line construction, where feasible, on the north side of the fire to complete containment.

Several areas, including a small spot fire outside the proposed line on the north side, are inaccessible to ground resources. Aerial helicopter drops from a mobile retardant base being set up at Mt. Wilson will be used to extinguish these areas along the fires perimeter.

Maintain current containment lines and ensure perimeter control. Mitigate hazard trees along roadways to provide safety for firefighters and the public.

Continue Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) efforts, infrastructure assessment, DECON, HazMat response, and damage assessments missions on the south side of the fire. These missions are unprecedented in size and scale and are expected to continue for an extended time. These missions are critical for mitigating existing hazards, confirming missing persons reports, obtaining accurate data for communication internally and external, and obtaining accurate number of structures loss.

Eaton Fire Evacuated Areas of Pasadena Water and Power water system is potentially impacted with debris and elevated turbidity

DO NOT DRINK YOUR WATER IN THE EVACUATED AREAS

Failure to follow this advisory could result in illness

What should I do?

DO NOT DRINK YOUR TAP WATER โ€” USE ONLY BOTTLED WATER. Bottled water should be used for all drinking (including baby formula and juice), brushing teeth, washing dishes, making ice, and food preparation until further notice. This also applies to pets and domestic animals.
DO NOT TRY AND TREAT THE WATER YOURSELF. Boiling, freezing, filtering, adding chlorine or other disinfectants, or letting water stand will not make the water safe

Pasadena Water and Power will inform you when tests show that the water is safe again. The expected timeframe for resolution is unknown and dependent on evolving fire, wind, and related conditions.

Pasadena Humane Society: Eaton Fire Update: We have taken in over 100 animals overnight and are continuing to take in animals for emergency boarding. Due to the proximity of the evacuation zones, we are also making preparations to evacuate the shelter, if needed. At this time, all animals are safe and unharmed at the shelter.

We continue to accept animals for emergency boarding at our Animal Resource Center at 361 S. Raymond Avenue, Pasadena, 91105.

However, due to kennel space filling up, we are asking that, if possible, evacuees bring their pets to our partner shelter spcaLA located at 5026 W. Jefferson Blvd., Los Angeles, 90016. Large animals should be taken to the LA Equestrian Center, 480 Riverside Dr, Burbank, CA 91506.

We are currently coordinating with Cal Animals and ASPCA disaster response to mobilize more resources to assist with the situation.

To help, we ask that anyone who can safely foster a dog or a cat for at least one week to please come to the Pasadena Humane Foster Office or email foster@pasadenahumane.org. Our greatest need is for large dog fosters. Please note that we do not have in-home history on most animals in our care and are unsure how they get along with other pets.

All schools within Pasadena Unified School District will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

With the volatility of the high-wind event affecting our area, increasing reports of wind damage, and a fire near Eaton Canyon, in an abundance of caution, we have made the decision to close all schools tomorrow, Wednesday, January 8, 2025. Additionally, the City of Pasadena is assessing whether to declare a state of emergency due to the impacts of the weather.

The closure will allow our crews time to evaluate and repair damages to ensure all campuses are safe for students and staff. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.

Thank you for your understanding as we prioritize the safety of our school community.

Meals: Because many of our students depend on school meals, Grab & Go meals will be available for pick up at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at Madison Elementary School (515 E Ashtabula St, Pasadena, CA 91104), McKinley School (325 S Oak Knoll Ave, Pasadena, CA 91101), and Willard Elementary School (301 Madre St, Pasadena, CA 91107).

PUSD will continue monitoring conditions and inform you on January 8 about reopening schools.

NEW Mandatory Evacuations: North of New York Drive, East of Altadena Drive, West of Sierra Madre Villa Ave.

Per LASD – Temple Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff: Multiple power lines are down in the city of Duarte, leading to a power outage. Several large trees have fallen, blocking lanes on both the north and south sides of Huntington Drive.

LASD deputies and public safety staff are assisting with traffic control and preparing for a potential response if the Altadena fire moves eastward.

January 7, 2025 at 8:26 PM

The fire is estimated at 400 acres.

January 7, 2025 at 7:57 PM

High winds are driving rapid fire growth, posing a significant threat to nearby communities and making containment efforts challenging. Firefighters are working aggressively to slow the spread and protect critical infrastructure under extreme conditions. The combination of low humidity, dry fuels, and shifting winds has heightened the potential for spot fires and rapid expansion. Residents are urged to remain alert and follow instructions from local authorities as the situation evolves.
