Due to continued progress, the LAFD Field Incident Management Team will be demobilizing and transitioning the Getty Fire incident to the local Battalion at 8:00 AM, Sunday, November 3rd.

Firefighters will remain on scene for the next several days extinguishing hot spots and patrolling the area to identify any potential hazards.

FIRE CAUSE: Investigators have determined the preliminary cause of the fire by using burn patterns, witness statements, and physical evidence. The fire was deemed an accidental start, caused by a tree branch that broke off and subsequently landed in nearby powerlines during high wind conditions. This errant tree branch caused the sparking and arcing of powerlines, igniting nearby brush. All powerlines on the pole remained intact.

CIVILIAN INJURIES: 0

FIREFIGHTER INJURIES: 5 (non-life threatening)

STRUCTURES AFFECTED: 0 residences are currently considered threatened. 10 residences have been destroyed and 15 residences have been damaged.

EVACUATION ORDERS: ALL EVACUATIONS ORDERS HAVE BEEN LIFTED. Residents within the former evacuation zones will be allowed to return to their homes. Residents will be required to provide identification and proof of residence.

As of 7PM, the size of the fire remains at 745 acres with 52% containment. The damage inspection report has been completed with new numbers as follows;10 residences destroyed, 15 residences damaged. Firefighters worked throughout the day patrolling the fire perimeter and cooling any remaining hot spots. Current objectives for crews this evening will be to further build upon containment lines. Weather is proving to be more favorable over the next couple of days with weak offshore winds of 10-15 mph expected. A low relative humidity trend will continue through much of the next week across Southern California. Conditions remain favorable for dangerous fire growth and behavior. Firefighters worked overnight to cool any hot spots and contain any flare ups within the current fire perimeter. Adverse weather conditions will continue to be the greatest challenge for firefighters. An Extreme Red Flag Warning remains in effect through 6:00PM. STrong Santa Ana winds with peak wind gusts of 30-50 mpw will continue to impact wind prone areas of Los Angeles. Widespread single digit relative humidity’s are forecasted. This all adds up to an extreme fire weather threat, meaning that conditions are as dangerous for fire growth and behavior as we have seen in recent years.

The only areas remaining under Mandatory Evacuation are within these borders:

  • West border: Kenter Avenue
  • South border: Sunset Boulevard
  • North border: Area just south of Mountaingate Avenue
  • East border: Area adjacent to the 405 Freeway and Sepulveda Boulevard.
  • NOTE: 405 Freeway is open in both directions. Sepulveda Boulevard northbound is open to all traffic. Sepulveda Boulevard southbound is open to all except from Skirball Center Drive to Sunset Boulevard, which is restricted to residents with I.D. only.

The Los Angeles Fire Department is announcing the repopulation of some areas impacted by the Getty Fire.

Effective October 30, 2019 at 5:00PM, Mandatory Evacuation orders and Warnings are lifted, with the exception of the RED areas in the map above. The only areas remaining under Mandatory Evacuation are within these borders:

  • West border: Kenter Avenue
  • South border: Sunset Boulevard
  • North border: Area just south of Mountaingate Avenue
  • East border: Area adjacent to Sepulveda Boulevard and the 405 Freeway
    NOTE: Both Sepulveda Boulevard and the 405 Freeway are now fully open to all vehicle traffic in both directions. Please drive carefully!

The Fire Incident Command continues to monitor the affected fire areas, as well as those areas remaining closed due to critical infrastructure concerns or safety hazards.  The Los Angeles Police Department will have a strong presence in the repopulated and evacuated areas for the next several days to ensure the protection of residents and their property. Information and tips regarding returning home after an evacuation can be found at www.mysafela.org/recovery/

Firefighters and aircraft have made good progress in slowing the spread of the fire. Firefighters are actively engaged in structure  protection throughout the evacuation zone. Aircraft and dozer teams are continuing to strengthen containment lines. We continue to monitor the weather with a Santa Ana wind event scheduled to begin again Tuesday at 11 PM. Low relative humidity and gusty wind will once again pose a threat for firefighters Tuesday night through mid-day Thursday.

STRUCTURES AFFECTED: There are over 10,000 structures (both residential and commercial) in the Mandatory Evacuation Zone. Eight residences have been destroyed and six residences have been damaged.

MANDATORY EVACUATION: Evacuation Orders have been lifted for the Mountaingate community. The official Evacuation Map indicates Mandatory Evacuation Zones in RED that remain in effect tonight. You can search for an address in the upper right corner of the map.

The borders of the Mandatory Evacuation (RED) Zone are with the exception of the Mountaingate community:

  • Temescal Canyon Road is the West border
  • Sunset Boulevard is the South border
  • Mulholland Drive is the North border

EVACUATION (PREPAREDNESS) WARNING: All residences in the Mountaingate community are now within the Evacuation Warning area. Those who reside in this community may return home but must be READY AND SET in the event conditions change. The official Evacuation Map indicates Evacuation Preparedness Zones in YELLOW that remain in effect tonight. You can search for an address in the upper right corner of the map.

ROAD CLOSURES: All southbound lanes of the 405 Freeway were reopened at 6:00 PM PDT Monday. All offramps from the southbound and northbound 405 Freeway between the 101 Freeway and Sunset Boulevard will remain closed until further notice.
