This will be the last Lake Fire Incident Update.

Crews are continuing with suppression repair efforts in the area of the Lake Fire. Water bars are being constructed on fire lines in the area to reduce the potential of soil erosion and contamination of waterways by potential debris flow. Heavy equipment will be used to push large piles of dirt and vegetation back over the lines. With the goal of restoring the area as close to pre-fire conditions as possible, the project will be underway for several weeks.

A type 3 incident management team from the Los Padres National Forest assumed command of the Lake Fire this morning at 7:00 a.m.

Forecast for Saturday: Hot and dry conditions will continue with highs in the upper 90s to low 100s.  Relative humidity will drop to between 12% and 28% in the afternoon.  Light winds are expected in the early morning, then west-northwest winds increase at 10:00 am to 5-10 mph with gusts from 15-18 mph.

Lake Fire Area Closure: All roads, trails, and recreational areas within the Los Padres National Forest Closure Order are closed to the public. Refer tothe Closure Order & Closure Order Map using links or visiting the Los Padres National Forest website. This closure will remain in effect until August 18, 2024, or until revised or rescinded.

Evacuation Areas: All Evacuation Orders and Evacuation Warnings previously in place due to the Lake Fire have been lifted. Residents are urged to drive slowly and take caution when returning home as emergency personnel continue working in the area. The Los Padres National Forest Closure Order is still in place.

July 24, 2024 at 9:45 AM

Yesterday at 4:00 p.m. the Santa Barbara County Sheriffโ€™s Office cancelled all Evacuation Orders and Evacuation Warnings previously in place due to the Lake Fire. Residents are urged to take caution when returning home as emergency personnel continue working in the area. The Los Padres National Forest Closure Order is still in place.

The majority of the work on the Lake Fire has transitioned to fire suppression repair. Crews and heavy equipment operators have been busy rehabilitating dozer lines, trails, and roadways around the fire area. Crews are working to the south from Manzana School House to the fire perimeter chipping brush cut to bolster control lines. After some difficulty getting equipment into the area, repair work has begun from Miranda Pines Mountain to the southwest. Along the southern edge of the fire, suppression repair is 95% complete. Firefighters are working with resource advisors assigned to the incident to identify sensitive cultural sites and damaged roads and trails.

Yesterday, flights by helicopters and drones with infrared camera technology found very little heat in the vicinity of the fire line. Firefighters will continue to seek out smoldering spots until they are certain there is no longer a threat to the established control line. Many hot spots are burning out on their own as heavy fuels burn down to ash.

Forecast for Wednesday: Persistent heat and low humidity are expected through Thursday.

Lake Fire Area Closure: Some roads and trails within the Los Padres National Forest are closed. Refer to the Closure

Order & Closure Order Map using links or visiting the Los Padres National Forest website. This closure will remain in effect until August 18, 2024, or until revised or rescinded.

Smoke: The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) have lifted the Air Quality Alert in the Santa Ynez Valley. The Air Quality Watch will remain in place countywide, and air quality conditions are forecasted to be good to moderate throughout the county.

July 22, 2024 at 9:52 AM

Firefighters will continue to seek out and extinguish hot spots within the perimeter of the Lake Fire today.  Most of the heat has been located in islands of unburned vegetation. Fire crews have been busy extinguishing these hot spots with support from helicopters. Fire behavior within these islands may increase later this week as temperatures rise and vegetation dries out.

Firefighters have begun the task back hauling equipment used to protect structures in the area away from the immediate perimeter of the burn. Besides removing hose lines and pump systems around structures, the fire resistant wrap used to protect the historic Manzana Schoolhouse and Dabney Cabin will be removed.

Contingency lines were constructed ahead of the fire as a precautionary measure in the event the fire escaped primary control lines. Firefighters are constructing water bars and taking other measures along these lines to reduce the potential of erosion during the winter rains.

Forecast for Monday: Persistent warmer and drier conditions continue with highs in the mid-90s to near 100 degrees mid-week. An excessive heat warning is in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday.

July 11, 2024 at 11:20 AM

Tactical firing operations will continue over the next couple of days on the south and south-east side of the fire to control fire spread.  A large spot fire crossed the line yesterday but is being tied back via dozer line to the planned control lines.  Westerly winds are assisting firefighters in keeping the fire from moving west toward ranches and communities.

Crews will be continuing to improve primary and contingency lines in the northern portion of the fire area with the intent of burning out along certain portions to create solid control lines.  Along much of the east portions of the fire, little growth has been seen as the fire moves into the 2007 Zaca Fire scar.

FUELS ADVISORY: Precipitation and temperature alignments throughout the winter and spring of 2024 have resulted in an above average load of herbaceous fuels across many grass-dominated systems throughout California. The above normal grass and herbaceous load creates a continuous fuel bed, allowing for rapid spread of fires when these fuels are cured. The continuous nature of the herbaceous fuel bed is enhanced by remnant thatch resulting from herbaceous growth during the abnormally wet late summer and fall of 2023 and multiple consecutive years of above average herbaceous growth.  View Fire and Fuels Advisory.

WEATHER: A Red Flag Warning remains in effect today with strong winds, potential for longer fire spotting distances along with hot, dry conditions. Due to the inversion layers, it is 40 to 50 degrees warmer above the 2000′ level than it is along the lower, coastal areas.  This warmer, dry, and windy weather will result in increased fire growth relative to previous days.

Lake Fire Background: On July 5, 2024, firefighters from the Los Padres National Forest and Santa Barbara County Fire responded to a vegetation fire near Zaca Lake that grew rapidly through grass and brush during a prolonged heat wave across the west coast. Some road closures and evacuation orders have been implemented. A significant number of firefighting resources are working the incident, including handcrews, engines, dozers, and air resources for water and retardant drops.
