Sheep, Angeles NF, USFS. Two miles southeast of Wrightwood, CA. Brush and timber. Minimal fire behavior with creeping and smoldering. Numerous residences threatened. Energy infrastructure threatened.

Crews will continue to patrol, secure, and strengthen all handlines. Mop up as needed to prevent unwanted fire spread. Suppression repair began on the contingency lines and will continue over the next couple of days.

Reduction of total acres on the incident is a result of GIS refining islands and perimeter line. The incident went out of unified command with San Bernardino County at 0700 6/15/2022.

Currently, the Sheep Fire is burning both in the Angeles National Forest and on private land near Wrightwood, CA. The fire is estimated at approximately 997 acres with 35% containment. No structures have been burned. 

As of 6:00 a.m. on June 14, 2022, California Interagency Incident Management Team 14 assumed command of the Sheep Fire. California Team 14 is in unified command with San Bernardino County Fire Department. Fighting this fire has been especially challenging due to dense vegetation, steep terrain, and high and erratic winds. The cause of the fire is under investigation.   

There are a total of 653 firefighting personnel on this incident. Cooperators include additional staff from Bureau of Land Management and county and local resources. 

Firefighters had great success today improving containment lines and moping-up hot spots. More favorable wind conditions allowed aircraft to support ground resources with water drops. Crews continued to work through the night to increase containment and hot spots.

EVACUATIONS: As of 8:00 p.m. June 14, 2022, evacuation orders and warnings for the communities of Wrightwood and Desert Front have been lifted. For specific details, visit the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Twitter site: @sbcountysheriff 

ROAD CLOSURES: Highway 2 will remain closed from Wright Mountain Road to Desert Front Road while CalTrans and Southern California Edison repair infrastructure along Highway 2 in the fire area. The Sheep Fire is being managed under Unified Command with CAL FIRE-BDU. The Angeles Crest Highway (Route 2) is closed from 2.8 mi east of the Los Angeles/San Bernardino Co line /at Wright Mountain Rd/ to the jct of SR 138 (San Bernardino Co) – due to a wildfire – motorists are advised to use an alternate route.

Currently, the Sheep Fire is burning both in the Angeles National Forest and on private land near Wrightwood, CA. A total of 300 people were evacuated from near the fire area yesterday on Sunday, June 12, 2022. No structures have been burned.

As of 1:20 p.m. on Monday, June 13, 2022, the fire is estimated at 990 acres in size and is 18% contained. The update in acreage is due to recent infrared mapping capabilities.

The fire is being co-managed by unified command: Angeles National Forest, San Bernardino County Fire, and CAL FIRE BDU likely through early morning on June 14, 2022, when a Type II Incident Management Team is expected to assume command. Fighting this fire has been especially challenging due to dense vegetation, steep terrain, and high and erratic winds. The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

There are a total 673 firefighting personnel on this incident. Cooperators include additional staff from Bureau of Land Management and county and local resources. 

Evacuations: The community of Phelan on Desert Front Road and Wildhorse Canyon are under mandatory evacuation orders. The community of Wrightwood continues to be on an evacuation warning. 

Closures: Hwy. 2 is closed. Hwy 138 is closed at Hwy 2.

An evacuation center for small animals and livestock has been established at the Devore Animal Shelter, 19777 Shelter Way, San Bernardino, CA. Residents are advised to contact County Animal Care and Control in advance at 1-800-472-5609 for evacuation assistance.

The San Bernardino County Fairgrounds (Victorville) will open at 11 p.m. tonight (Sunday, June 12, 2022) for large animals. Residents need to call 800-472-5609 for assistance prior to arrival.

June 12, 2022 – Currently, the Sheep Fire is burning both in the Angeles National Forest and on private land near Wrightwood, CA. San Bernardino County reported the fire on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 6:36 p.m. to the Angeles National Forest Emergency Communications Center. The fire was initially reported as approximately ¼-acre in size. 

As of 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, 2022, the fire is estimated at 990 acres in size and is 5% contained.
