District Attorney Jesse Wilson and Sergeant Matt Harrison of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office will be the panelists for the upcoming Nevada County Community Forum to be held on Friday, August 29th, from 10:30 to 11:30 am at the Sierra College Nevada County campus, building N12. Discussions will center on two important topics: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities in relation to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and implementation, since its recent passage of Proposition 36.

“We read and watch a lot about immigration raids in California and about rampant ‘grab and go’ burglaries so I think this should be a fabulous topic to localize,” said Terry McAteer, the moderator for this Forum. The one hour event is free and open to the public. McAteer, the retired Nevada County Superintendent of Schools, believes that the public needs to understand the relationship between our local law enforcement agencies and federal enforcement agencies. The other topic to be discussed is the implementation of Prop 36 which raised penalties in California for retail burglaries and auto theft to combat a growing wave of non-violent crimes.

The Community Forum is a monthly event, hosted by the Sierra College Foundation, to provide the public with access to Nevada County policy makers on a variety of local topics. The Forum is free to the public, provides free parking at the college and the public is welcome to bring friends to this monthly event. The final 15 minutes of the Forum allows the public to ask questions of the panelists. The Forum will be videotaped and available on the Sierra College Foundation website at: www.sierracollege.edu/ncc

Next month’s Community Forum, to be held on Friday, Sept. 26, will host a discussion on fighting California wildfires with pilots from the Nevada County Air Attack Base. Lorraine Jewett will moderate this lively discussion about how instrumental the Air Base is for our local community.
