We will be hosting a Bio Char Kiln Workshop this Saturday December 6th at Hirschman’s Pond with the Wildfire Ready Coalition of Nevada County.

A Biochar Kiln removes hazardous vegetation in a way that is safe and produces low smoke, which helps us achieve our goal of keeping Nevada City safer from wildfire.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about protecting your home while connecting with our community.  Weโ€™ll be making smores and hot chocolate while educating each other on wildfire safety tips, practices and fire wise communities.

What is a Bio-Char Kiln?

A biochar kiln is a specialized oven or container created to generate biochar, a charcoal-like substance. It operates by heating organic material (biomass) at elevated temperatures in a highly restricted oxygen environment through a process known as pyrolysis. The Kilns must remainย sealedย at the bottom. The bio-char kiln burning process typically involves setting up a metal kiln, filling it with wood, igniting it, and continuously feedingย woodย into it as the fire burns down. The design of these devices significantly reduces smoke production compared to pile burning and, with appropriate precautions, minimizes the risk of escape since the fire is contained within the kiln. The kiln generates a bio-char product that can be used as a solid amendment or added to compost, among other applications.ย Only purpose-built Bio-Char Kilns are permitted.
