McClellan, CA – CAL FIRE’s Aviation Program is conducting night operations training for helitack crews and pilots from December 9th to 12th near Mammoth Bar in Placer County. This training ensures crews are prepared for nighttime aerial firefighting operations.
Residents near the training area can expect helicopter activity to conclude by 11 p.m. All flights will be conducted in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and CAL FIRE safety protocols.
Importance of Training at Night
CAL FIRE’s commitment to readiness requires operational specific training. By conducting exercises at night, pilots and crews gain valuable experience in water dropping, navigation and communication aided by night vision goggles (NVG). This training enhances their proficiency and ensures a unified, safe response during fire suppression at night.
CAL FIRE prioritizes public safety and is committed to minimizing disruption to the surrounding communities. We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of the public as we conduct this important training exercise.
