Nevada City, Calif. — The City of Nevada City (City) is set to take operational control of the Miners Foundry Cultural Center (Foundry), with approval from the Foundry Board and City Council, to preserve this critical community asset and expand public access to its valuable programs and facilities use.
The Foundry is entering an exciting new chapter through the leadership of the Board of Directors, with the partnership with the City of Nevada City. This collaboration will enhance the Foundry’s role as a cornerstone of regional culture while preserving its historic mission. By integrating City resources and oversight, the Foundry will expand its programming, strengthen community connections, and ensure long-term sustainability. Building on its resilience through recent challenges, this partnership creates opportunities for innovative events, educational programs, and cultural preservation. The renewed Foundry will maintain its mission and trusted position as a premier cultural venue, while developing new ways to serve the City and Nevada County residents, businesses and visitors.
The Miners Foundry Cultural Center board members expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “Our priority is to maintain the Foundry’s role as a cultural cornerstone of Nevada City, ensuring the vibrancy of this historic venue,” said, Foundry Board Member, Paul Emery. “We are thrilled to partner with the City to ensure the continued vibrancy of this historic venue.”
The transition comes amid broader challenges facing event venues statewide. Since April 2024, the City and Miners Foundry have been discussing the venue’s future and increasing financial pressures. The City will assume control on Feb. 17, 2025, with the goal of maintaining uninterrupted programming while expanding community engagement.
“This is an incredible investment in our community’s cultural future,” said Mayor Gary Petersen. “By stepping in to support the Miners Foundry, we’re demonstrating our commitment to preserving a vital cultural hub that brings our community together, provides important public spaces, and supports local arts and business.”
Under the proposed agreement, the City will:
- Maintain all existing bookings and event commitments.
- Provide ongoing facility management.
- Develop a comprehensive plan for the organization’s transition.
- Potentially retain current staff to ensure operational continuity.
- Establish a community input committee to maintain transparency.
On Feb. 13, 2025, the Foundry Board will consider the final agreement during their board meeting, starting at 11 a.m. at 325 Spring St., and the Nevada City Council will consider the final agreement at a special City Council meeting, starting at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 317 Broad St.
