Nevada City, CA — 11/8/25 — For the first time since its founding in 1978, Community Beyond Violence (CBV) will soon own its very own emergency shelter — a permanent space for refuge for survivors of domestic violence and their children in Western Nevada County.
For over four decades, CBV rented various spaces and envisioned a day when survivors could find safety and stability in a home owned by the organization. That long-held dream is now becoming a reality.
“This milestone represents stability and strength, not only for our organization, but for every survivor who walks through our doors,” said Allison Bischofberger, Executive Director of Community Beyond Violence. “Owning our own shelter allows us to better protect and empower survivors as they rebuild their lives.”
The new property — will provide 18 beds for survivors and their children, and the privacy and respite needed to heal. Ownership of this home marks a major step forward in CBV’s long-term sustainability and its ability to provide consistent, secure shelter services for years to come.
This achievement was made possible thanks to the generosity and vision of KARE Crisis Nursery. Upon closing their doors after 20 years of caring for the safety and well-being of our community’s children, their gift ensures that their legacy of protection and compassion will live on through continued service to vulnerable community members.
To celebrate this achievement, Community Beyond Violence invites the public to a free community ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, November 13th at 4:30 p.m. in the plaza in front of the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce (132 Main Street, Nevada City).
Following the ceremony, guests are invited to join CBV staff, board members, and community partners for celebratory drinks at The National.
“This is not just a new shelter, it’s also a new chapter for our community,” said Kirsten Dees, CBV Board President. “Together, we’re building a foundation of hope that will protect and empower survivors for generations to come.”
