Nevada City, CA – Nelson, an architectural firm hired by the County in July 2024, will present its findings for possible future use of the existing Nevada City Courthouse site at a community meeting Wednesday, Jan. 29.

The meeting is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. in the Nevada City Council Chambers, 317 Broad St. and will be livestreamed at www.youtube.com/@CountyofNevadaCA/streams.

The original courthouse was built in 1856, rebuilt in 1864, added onto in 1900, and then remodeled and added onto in 1936, in the Art Moderne style as we know it today. The courthouse is expected to be vacated in 2031 as a result of the state’s decision to construct a replacement building. Per California’s Surplus Lands Act, the building will be offered to developers for affordable housing or to other public agencies before considering private sales or alternate uses and Nelson’s work will assist the County in next steps after the building is vacated.

“This is an early step in a long-term process as any project cannot move forward until the courts move out,” said Supervisor Heidi Hall. “However, this is a critical opportunity for residents to stay informed and provide valuable input. We encourage everyone to attend and be part of this important conversation.”
