In a community like Nevada County, where neighbors show up for one another in meaningful ways, access to compassionate, practical education around aging, caregiving, and end-of-life planning is more important than ever. That’s what’s behind the Community Education Series from Foothills Compassionate Care: creating welcoming spaces where individuals and families can learn, reflect, and prepare together.
These facilitated discussions are designed to empower people with knowledge, reduce fear around difficult conversations, and ultimately ensure that each person’s wishes are understood and honored.
“This series is really about meeting people where they are,” says Liz Dreher, Community Relations Manager at Foothills Compassionate Care. “We want to create a space where conversations about uncertainty, care, and planning feel approachable and supported. Education is one of the most meaningful ways we can serve our community.”

This spring, Foothills Compassionate Care is offering several opportunities for community members to connect and learn:
On April 9, the “5 Wishes” workshop at Bret Harte provides a thoughtful, guided approach to advance care planning. Participants will explore a nationally recognized document that helps articulate personal, emotional, and medical preferences for care—making it easier for loved ones to honor those wishes when it matters most.
On April 16, a session on cannabis will offer education around its use in comfort care, addressing common questions and misconceptions. As more individuals explore alternative options for managing pain and symptoms, this course provides grounded, compassionate information to support informed decision-making.
On May 28, another “5 Wishes” workshop will be offered, expanding access for those unable to attend the earlier session and continuing the conversation around planning with dignity and intention.
Melynda Ruckles, who is leading the conversation on cannabis options for patients, is a Holistic Registered Nurse with over four decades of experience across Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care (ICU), Community Health, and Integrative Therapies. She brings a deeply informed and compassionate lens to this work.

“My clinical background has shown me time and again how important it is for individuals to have enough information to make informed decisions. My focus is education and empowering each client to become their own advocate,” she shares. “These classes help people feel more prepared, more confident, and more at peace with the decisions ahead.”
What makes this series especially impactful is its accessibility. These are not clinical lectures but rather they are community-centered conversations. Whether someone is a caregiver, planning for the future, or simply curious, all are welcome.
Foothills Compassionate Care understands that education is a powerful way to care for the community. By offering these classes, they are not only supporting individuals—they are strengthening the fabric of the entire community. When more people feel prepared, informed, and supported, we all benefit.
In a place that values connection as deeply as Nevada County does, the Community Education Series is more than a set of workshops—it’s an invitation to care for one another, with knowledge, compassion, and intention.
Foothills Compassionate Care is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing no-cost, non-medical support to individuals facing serious illness, as well as their caregivers and loved ones.
