ROCKLIN, CA — Pioneer Community Energy (Pioneer), a locally owned, not-for-profit electricity provider, announced that the City of Grass Valley and City of Nevada City approved the use of the Green100 product to power all municipal operations. Green100 is a 100 percent renewable energy product offered exclusively by Pioneer.

The City of Nevada City and City of Grass Valley joined Pioneer in January 2024. Both cities evaluated Pioneer’s product offerings, along with their respective rate structures compared to Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) products, and billing histories for City accounts. The analyses found that choosing Pioneer’s Green100 product allows them to advance climate action plan objectives while still receiving a discount over PG&E generation rates.

“In addition to cost savings, enrolling in Green100 provides the benefit of choosing electricity with little or no greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions,” said Sean Grayson, City Manager of Nevada City. “Choosing the Green100 option provides the City resources to meet state-mandated carbon reduction requirements.”

“We are pleased that the City of Grass Valley’s transition to Pioneer allows for greater choice in energy options for the City and its residents,” said Tim Kiser, Grass Valley City Manager. “Green100 provides a straightforward way for the City to reduce its carbon footprint and the environmental impact of its electricity usage.”

Pioneer is the only electricity provider in this region that offers a 100 percent renewable energy option for residents and businesses. Renewable resources used for Green100 are published annually on Pioneer’s Power Content Label and may include geothermal, wind, solar, hydroelectric, and biomass energy production. Pioneer purchases renewable electricity from local resources and from within California, whenever possible.

The City of Auburn, also a Pioneer customer, opted up to Green100 in 2022, lowering the amount of CO2 being released into the atmosphere by 2.1 million pounds (the equivalent to avoiding 2.4 million miles driven by the average gasoline fueled car).

The Green100 plan is entirely voluntary and available to both commercial and residential customers. Additional information is available at www.pioneercommunityenergy.org.
