MARYSVILLE May 26, 2017 – Caltrans is alerting motorists to anticipate delays on area roadways as motorists make their way to their Memorial Day weekend destinations.
The American Automobile Association (AAA) reports almost 1.8 million people will be traveling this weekend – and more than 90 percent of them, or 1.6 million, are planning a road trip.
Travelers to the many popular destinations in the 11 county area of Caltrans District 3, including Lake Tahoe, the American, Yuba, Sacramento and Feather rivers, Gold Rush historical areas, and the Delta, to name but a few, will join motorists on area freeways who are traveling to even farther destinations, especially on Interstate 80 and Interstate 5. Because increased traffic volumes usually result in traffic congestion, Caltrans recommends that motorists traveling this weekend plan for delays and allow extra time for travel.
Motorists are encouraged to travel with plenty of fuel, water and snacks as well as remain alert, avoid distractions and refrain from tailgating. Only one collision can halt the flow of traffic, resulting in traffic backups that can extend for miles and last for hours. Traveling safely also means wearing a seatbelt, obeying the speed limit, turning on headlights, and making sure your vehicle is in good working order before leaving home.

While no construction or maintenance work is scheduled for the holiday weekend, motorists are urged to “Slow for the Cone Zone” and “Move Over” when safe to do so whenever flashing lights, first responders, or Caltrans workers are observed on the highway.
