GRASS VALLEY, CA, March 25, 2026 — Music in the Mountains invites music lovers and anyone who wants to learn more about classical music to a special online presentation, “Musings with the Maestro: A Brief History of Classical Music,” led by Artistic Director and Conductor Ryan Murray, on Wednesday, April 1 at 7:00 PM.
Part of the popular Musings with the Maestro series, this engaging virtual conversation will explore the rich evolution of classical music across four major historical periods: baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary. While previous Musings sessions have taken deep dives into individual composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Debussy, and Mahler, this presentation will zoom out to place those composers within the broader historical context of classical music.
Participants will learn about the defining stylistic characteristics and most influential composers of each period, and how the sound and structure of music evolved over centuries. The session will also help listeners discover which styles and eras resonate most with their own musical tastes.

As a conductor, Murray has performed music from each of these eras, and studied the composers that shaped them. Drawing on that experience, he will also offer insight into how he crafts Music in the Mountains’ programs, and the artistic considerations that inform a compelling concert.
“There is so much variety in classical music; there is really something for everyone,” says Murray. “The amount of variety that exists within classical music is as big as the variety between jazz and pop and country and classical. Some people think only of baroque music when they think of classical music because that’s what you often hear on the radio.”
The Musings with the Maestro series is designed to make classical music approachable and engaging for everyone, from longtime fans to those who are just beginning to explore the repertoire.
Music in the Mountains is dedicated to inspiring, engaging, and connecting the community through extraordinary musical experiences and accessible educational programs.
The event is free with a suggested donation of $10, and open to the public. Participants will receive a Zoom link upon registration.
