Nevada City, Calif. — The Governor’s Office of Planning and Research has notified the City of its intent to award a $250,000 grant for the development of a new Neighbors to Neighbors Preparedness and Education Program for city residents. The program aims to provide residents with valuable resources and information to better prepare for wildfires and ensure safety of their homes and families.

The purpose of this program is to foster strong bonds between neighbors in the fight against wildfires. Our goal is to work with the County, regional fire preparedness agencies, local nonprofits, and neighborhood associations to engage specific neighborhoods in trainings, volunteer activities, and recognition events that will prepare them to protect each other in the event of a wildfire. The City of Nevada City recognizes that neighbors are the final line of defense for those who need help in evacuating during an emergency. These activities will make neighborhoods more resilient in the face of an emergency and the social bonds that emerge will improve the daily quality of life for residents.

Led by Nevada City Office of Emergency Services (OES) staff, with partners from The County of Nevada, FREED center, local Firewise communities, local fire personnel, and Sierra Roots, the program is committed to including those with access and functional needs, those experiencing homelessness, and all groups that might encounter additional difficulties in the event of a disaster.

The City of Nevada City is eager to facilitate these projects and engage the community to enhance preparedness efforts to help make Nevada City “Safer from Wildfire”.
