Nevada County’s total gross value of all agricultural commodities excluding cannabis in 2023 was $24.4 million, according to the County’s Annual Crop and Livestock Report released earlier this month. That was a 30% increase from the year before.
“This marks the second highest value in the past 10 years. Many crops rebounded from the 2022 freezing weather event, including wine grapes which increased nearly $2 million compared to 2022,” said Agricultural Commissioner Chris de Njis.
In addition, the gross value of cannabis for 2023 was $10.2 million, which represents an increase of 47% from the previous year.
Both figures do not attempt to measure farm profitably or try to quantify the economic contributions to the economy.
Supervisors were happy to see the increases at their Board meeting Tuesday. “It’s really important to support the folks out there that are growing our food and the food security that comes with that,” said Supervisor Sue Hoek.
