New Photography Exhibit “Portrait: Tree, Human-Made Object, Human, Seedpod” to Open Jan. 10 at the Edward Jones Gallery

A unique photography exhibit will open on January 10, 2025, at the Edward Jones gallery in Grass Valley.  The title of the exhibit is “Portrait: Tree, Human-Made Object, Human, Seedpod”.  This exhibit expands the normal definition of a portrait by capturing portrait-like characteristics in non-human subjects alongside human portraits.   

“Many artists and photographers strive to capture the unique physical characteristics, personalities, and moods of humans. But non-human entities, both alive and not, can also be said to exhibit personalities and express moods. When an image conveys the essence of a nonhuman subject as if it were a human, can we think of it as a portrait?” asked Donna Levreault, one of the four artists featured in this exhibit.    

The three other photographers showcasing their work include Charlotte Peterson, Dee Anne Dinelli, and Eric Engles.  

All accomplished photographers, they have been meeting together regularly since 2017 to inspire and encourage each other.  They named themselves, “Four Eyes” as their individual talents and different photographic styles have enabled them to look at things with very different perspectives and to expand their individual creativity. 

Donna and Eric are drawn to the botanical realm where Charlotte focuses on human-made elements.  Dee Anne adds another dimension with her of images of tattooed women, completing the notion of portraits.  

The opening reception for these 35 photographs will be Friday, January 10 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm.   Refreshments will be provided and the public is invited to experience four different takes on the definition of a portrait.
