The Nevada County Law Library, in collaboration with the Madelyn Helling Library, continues its Noon Time Legal Seminars by presenting a free seminar on “Understanding Probate in California,” by local attorney, Dylan Hendricks, on Tuesday, February 17, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. You may attend in person at the Madelyn Helling Library (980 Helling Way, Nevada City) or remotely, via TEAMS. This seminar is geared towards the non-legal community, although everyone is welcome. No Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credit is offered. These seminars are designed for information only and do not constitute legal advice.
The following topics will be covered:
- What is probate?
- How does it relate to wills and estate planning?
- When is probate necessary?
- What is the general process for a simple probate?
- When is having an attorney for the estate needed?
- Why is it wise to get it done correctly the first time?
- Are there any alternatives to a full probate process?
- What is a Small Estate Affidavit?
- How to do DMV transfers without probate?
The Law Library and Self-Help Center have the forms for Small Estate Affidavit and DMV transfers. You may pick them up from their offices at the Superior Court of Nevada County, 201 Church Street, Nevada City.
The Law Library appreciates Dylan Hendricks for her many years of presenting these Noon Time Legal Seminars to the community. She is one of the owners of Hendricks McFarlane, P.C., with a practice focused on estate plans. She is past president of the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation Board and frequently consults with local non-profits on a pro-bono basis. She is a proud mom of two.
