Are you confused by why the prosecution and defense can each claim “we won” in the same case? How each side protects their side of the case and why it matters.

About the Presenters
Jesse Wilson is the District Attorney for Nevada County. He is a California native, attended University of California, Davis, and the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. Jesse began his career as a legal intern with the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office in July 2010, was admitted to the California State Bar in January 2012, and hired as a Nevada County Deputy District Attorney later that year. He was named the Nevada County Prosecutor of the Year in May 2018. Jesse maintains his passion for the law and justice and takes pride in serving the citizens of Nevada County. His focus is on keeping our community a safe and wholesome place that we all love. Jesse understands the importance of the modern prosecutor to be more than just a name on a door; the District Attorney needs to be a participating and proactive member of the community accessible to all. It is also important to remember that the job is not just applying the law but, more importantly, seeing that justice is done in every case.
Keri Klein has been the Public Defender for Nevada County since 2016. She gives continuing education seminars on plea negotiations, ethics, Public Defense Management, and has been a faculty member for the California Public Defenders’ Association Trial Skills Institute since 2005. Keri focuses on modernizing the Public Defender’s Office through the use of technology, performance guidelines and the implementation of best practices. She embraces the idea of recidivism reduction through a client- centered approach of representation, which combines aggressive advocacy in court with the acknowledgment that most poverty-stricken people who are arrested and charged with crimes have other challenges from housing, to addiction, to mental illness, to lack of employment, to underemployment and lack of sufficient education. Keri supports addressing the underlying issues which drive people into the criminal system to obtain better case and life outcomes for her clients and community.
