Last night northern California was treated to an unusually bright celestial spectacle. Northern lights, also called aurora borealis, were visible for a very long time in the sky. A strong geomagnetic storm brought the lightshow to our area. With the impending arrival of the 11 Nov coronal mass ejection (CME) later today, elevated geomagnetic storm levels are likely to carry over into 14 Nov (UTC day), per the Space Weather Prediction Center: Geomagnetic Storm Category G4 or Greater Predicted for tonight.

Here are the photos our readers shared with us – and there is a chance to see more tonight. Using your phone’s camera, turn on night mode and enjoy. Then, email your photos!

Thanks to everyone who shared their photos and keep your eyes peeled towards the northern sky tonight – if the clouds don’t pull a blanket over the skies.
