Nevada City, CA – In an ongoing effort to promote fire prevention, Nevada County in partnership with Waste Management of Nevada County, CAL FIRE, City of Grass Valley, City of Nevada City, and Nevada County Consolidated Fire District is announcing another free green waste disposal day on Monday, June 17. The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the McCourtney Road Transfer Station in Grass Valley.

As fire season approaches, it’s crucial for homeowners to take proactive steps in protecting their properties. Removing flammable vegetation and creating defensible space around homes can significantly reduce the risk of wildfires spreading.

This event follows five previous free green waste disposal days offered to Nevada County residents since April. The most popular was on Memorial Day when nearly 400 cars visited the transfer station to drop off 151.56 tons of tree branches, shrubs, grass clippings and more. The County is also providing 100 free green waste bins to Firewise Communities (neighbors working together to reduce the risk of wildfire). The services are helpful solutions for residents who find their regular green waste carts insufficient and don’t want to wait for bi-weekly pickup.

“With the increasing threat of wildfires, it’s important that we all do our part to protect our properties, and the County,” said Office of Emergency Services Director Craig Griesbach. “I’m grateful to all residents who are cleaning up their land and I hope even more will do so. We encourage everyone to take advantage of these free disposal programs to help mitigate the risk of wildfire.”

The June 17 green waste disposal day was added to offer residents a final opportunity to clean- up around their homes before summer is officially here and wildfire conditions make many vegetation removal activities unsafe, including the use of equipment like chainsaws. The free green waste disposal days are funded by the County of Nevada through American Rescue Plan Act Funds (ARPA).

“This partnership allows us to keep our rural county beautiful and clean,” said Shavati Karki- Pearl, public sector manager for Waste Management.
