Nevada County, Calif. November 3, 2021 – The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 cleared the final hurdle for Emergency Use Authorization. With recommendations from the FDA, the CDC, and the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup, health officials expect the vaccine to be available to California residents in the coming days.
“We know that parents have waited patiently for a vaccine to protect their young children. We now have a safe and highly effective vaccine to protect our kids and their families,” said Nevada County Public Health Officer Dr. Scott Kellermann.
According to the California Department of Public Health, over 5,600 children ages 5 to 11 live in Nevada County. Local public health officials are coordinating with schools, pediatricians, and clinics to make the vaccine available to families.
The Nevada County Public Health department will host a free vaccination clinic for children ages ages 5 to 18 on November 16th at the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building in Grass Valley.
“We’re offering an opportunity to get local kids vaccinated quickly. With second doses scheduled for December 7th, kids who get vaccinated at the November 16th clinic will be fully protected just in time for the December holidays.” said Public Health Director Jill Blake.
The vaccination event will be geared specifically to young children, with fun activities, a calming corner, and physicians on hand to answer questions. A parent or guardian must be present with any minor receiving a vaccination. The State will make appointments available on MyTurn.ca.gov beginning November 4th.
