Auburn, California – The Placer Resource Conservation District (Placer RCD), in partnership with the City of San Mateo, has launched a new compost cost-share pilot program that will deliver affordable, high-quality compost directly to local farms and ranches.

Compost Application

The program provides cost-share assistance of up to $67 per ton, covering most, if not all, of the compost and delivery costs. Compost can be used on rangeland, cropland, orchards, vineyards, and pastures, and is a proven way to improve both productivity and long-term soil health.

โ€œCompost is one of the most practical tools we have for improving soil health,โ€ said Brian Pimentel, Agriculture Program Manager at Placer RCD. โ€œBy increasing water-holding capacity and drought resilience, supporting soil biology and nutrient cycling, and enhancing soil structure and infiltration, continuous compost applications can make a real difference for both farmers and the long-term sustainability of our working lands.โ€

Half of the compost available through the program is reserved for small farms of 25 acres or less. To qualify, farms and ranches must be actively engaged in agricultural production and able to accept a minimum of 20 tons (about 3 acres worth). Applications are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until 2025 funds are exhausted.

Farmers and ranchers interested in applying can visit www.placerrcd.org/compost or call Placer RCD at (530) 390-6680 for more information.
