Grass Valley, California – Get ready to immerse yourself in a summer of fun and learning with Nevada County Library’s “Read, Renew, Repeat!” Summer Learning Program for kids and teens. The program is designed to keep young minds engaged and build a bridge of knowledge while school is out logging their reading and participating in programming throughout the summer.

This year’s theme, “Read, Renew, Repeat!” emphasizes the importance of conservation, teaching participants how to make a difference in preserving our planet’s habitats and resources.
The Summer Learning Program kicks off on June 15 with a kick-off party at Madelyn Helling Library (980 Helling Way, Nevada City) from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The festivities include captivating puppet shows with Puppet Art Theater and Emily Butterfly, shaved ice, face painting and a raffle for a chance to win pool passes!
Kids and teens can visit their local library branch anytime between June 15-August 10 to pick up a reading log or opt for a paperless experience by registering on the Beanstack app to log book titles, track reading minutes and join leaderboard challenges with friends.

Many families experience food insecurity in our community and with rising costs at the grocery store, access to healthy food is as critical as ever. In 2022, according to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap, 13.4% of children under the age of 18 were considered food insecure in Nevada County.
Why Summer Reading Matters
Children who don’t read during the summer can lose up to two months of learning by the time they return to school in the fall? Kids and teens who participate in summer learning programs and read at least six books over the summer tend to score higher in reading and math upon their return. That’s why libraries nationwide promote summer reading with engaging activities, challenges, and community events.
