Grass Valley, 10/25/24 – In a heartwarming effort to provide comfort and care to families, the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital (SNMH) Auxiliary, under the leadership of board member and auxiliary member Katy McKay, has revitalized the Intensive Critical Care Unit (ICCU) Family Waiting Room. The refreshed space is designed to be lighter, brighter, and more inviting, creating a serene environment for families navigating challenging times. This beautification project, funded entirely by the SNMH Auxiliary, exemplifies their ongoing commitment to supporting the hospital and enhancing patient and family experiences.

The ICCU Family Waiting Room project aligns with the larger $1.2 million SNMH Foundation ICCU Modernization Project, which aims to upgrade the 10-bed ICCU. Currently, the Foundation is at 82% of its fundraising goal, with plans to reach 100% by year-end. Together, these complementary initiatives will make a substantial difference in the lives of patients and the ir families by improving both the care environment and the family waiting areas.
Katy McKay has collaborated closely with hospital leaders to ensure the redesign aligns with the hospital’s operational needs while creating an uplifting space for families. “Katy’s vision has transformed the waiting room into a more comforting space, offering families a place of reprieve during life’s most challenging moments,” said Sandra Barrington, Executive Director of the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation. Katheryn Kray, SNMH’s Senior Director of Nursing for the ICCU, played an instrumental role in aligning the updates with the unique needs of the unit, while Infection Control Manager Heather Scott and Facilities Management Director Calob Rangel ensured that all improvements meet health and safety standards and facilitated the room’s physical transformation.

While a fresh coat of paint has already brightened the waiting room, new artwork and lighting will be installed in the coming months to complete the transformation. This collaborative effort between the SNMH Auxiliary and hospital leaders is expected to wrap up by the end of the calendar year, with the goal of offering a completed, calming space as the broader ICCU Modernization Project reaches its final phase.
The SNMH Auxiliary’s contributions to this project reflect their dedication to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital’s mission. By providing families with a welcoming, peaceful waiting room, the hospital and Auxiliary acknowledge the emotional toll of waiting and aim to bring a bit of comfort to families in difficult times.
